Cinco de Mayo Virtual Party transcript:
Bringing a Tupperware container of dry chicken breast and a few broccoli stalks to your holiday party is so 2013. This year let’s enjoy the party, enjoy the people, and enjoy the food. Here are 4 simple strategies to combat celebratory weight gain:
1-CUT PORTIONS IN HALF. Just slice everything on your plate and eat half. Likely you will be satisfied, but not stuffed.
2-Use the 3 BITE RULE, especially for dessert.
3-SAVE YOUR CALORIES. Eat very lightly the rest of the day. Don’t eat so little that you are ravenous, but think of it as saving your calories for the party. I’ve read many articles that say DON’T save up your calories or EAT something before you go to the party, but I don’t agree. That’s just my opinion, and you are welcome to take it or leave it. I want to enjoy a special dinner or a drink or dessert. I don’t want to eat a yogurt or carrot sticks before I head out to a filet mignon supper. I’ll save those calories for the good stuff.
4- ONLY EAT THE VERY BEST. Using thanksgiving dinner as an example, I could easily forgo the turkey, cranberry sauce, and sweet potatoes covered in marshmallow. Instead, I want the mashed potatoes, gravy and green bean casserole. I eat what I love and don’t even miss the other things.
This is for when you want to budget out your calories to have a good-sized portion of a special item. If you want an entire piece of cheesecake, then eat only small amounts of other food on the plate, or skip what you don’t love. This is not practicing excellent nutrition, mind you. It’s a strategy for special occasions when you want to indulge without blowing your diet.

Corie N: Using a salad plate instead of a dinner plate. Less space to overload!
Laura F: My tip is to not go to a party hungry. I have more control if I’m not starving.
Terri W: I try not to go to a party hungry or without a game plan.

Carmel G: Blueberry Salsa (2 cups coarse chopped blueberries 1 cup whole blueberries 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice , 3 TBSP chopped cilantro, 2 diced jalapeno, 1/3 c diced red pepper and 1/2 tsp salt.)
Laura F: Black Bean Salad
Brittany M: Mashed sweet potatoes with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Missy B: Hummus (two can chick peas, tablespoon or more of sesame seed oil, tablespoon or more of oilive oil, red pepper flakes, four garlic pieces sqeezed. Zip up in a food processor and my favorite humus is made!!! I usually have veggies to dip in it or bake some pita which I cut up. It’s yummers.) or her hubby’s spicy salsa.
Terri W: Slow Cooker Chicken & Sweet Potato Korma or fresh fruit.
Corie N: Fresh veggies.
Lorie O: Homemade pico de gallo (I take 5-6 organic beefsteak tomatoes (seeded/chopped); med Spanish onion (chopped); can of chopped jalapeños; a tsp chopped garlic, about a cup (I’m a little heavy handed – most people like less) chopped cilantro; the juice of 2 limes; sea salt/pepper and mix up – store in a mason jar. There isn’t a meal it doesn’t go well with!!)
Michelle G: Veggies with ranch or hummus.
Amanda R: Avocado Cottage Cheese Dip ( I just kinda throw it together. I’d say one container of cottage cheese, 2 or 3 avocados, 1/2 yellow onion, 1/2 bunch cilantro, jalapenos depends on their heat 2 or 3 maybe.)
